Mercedes have traced George Russell’s recent power loss to a software problem. The fault reduced electrical deployment at Spa-Francorchamps.

Russell completed both Friday practices in Hungary and finished fifth in each session.

Spa exposed the deployment fault

Russell lost electrical assistance while accelerating along Spa’s longest flat-out section. Several cars passed before he reached the braking zone.

The reduced deployment placed him beside Lewis Hamilton on the opening lap. Their later contact ended Russell’s race soon afterwards.

Mercedes first studied Russell’s throttle use and gear choices. The team searched for differences between both cars during the weekend.

Russell changed his driving while engineers compared the available data. Those adjustments did not restore the missing straight-line performance.

The investigation continued after the Belgian Grand Prix. Engineers then found an error inside the power unit software.

Russell said the discovery removed blame from his driving technique. It also gave Mercedes a defined problem to correct.

The battery delivered less energy than expected

Modern Formula 1 power units combine combustion power with electrical energy. Software controls when stored energy reaches the rear wheels.

Russell reached the straight with less useful deployment than planned. The loss became obvious beside cars with normal electrical assistance.

Kimi Antonelli also encountered the Mercedes system problem during the race. His different approach through Eau Rouge reduced its effect.
