The statement describes a possible direction, not an approved technical rule. Formula 1 is currently racing under the hybrid regulations introduced for 2026.
The current engine combines two power sources
The 2026 power unit retains a turbocharged 1.6-litre V6 combustion engine. Its electrical system supplies a much larger share of total power than the previous generation. Cars recover energy under braking and store it in a battery. Drivers and control software then manage deployment around each lap.
Sustainable fuel is another central part of the rules. The fuel requirement separates future combustion engines from the petrol formulas used several decades ago. Engine manufacturers spent several years designing their present power units. Any replacement would therefore require a clear timetable and agreement on cost, performance and supply.
Parker gave a broad five-to-ten-year range
Parker said he does not expect Formula 1 to become fully electric. He predicted that V8 engines would become the main source of power within five to ten years. His range extends beyond the current regulatory period. It does not identify a final introduction season or a completed set of technical dimensions.
The FIA has separately discussed a simpler engine for 2030 or 2031. Those conversations include lower cost and sustainable fuel alongside the desired sound. Formula 1 and the FIA share responsibility for the future framework. Existing manufacturers and possible independent suppliers also have a direct interest in the decision.

A V8 proposal still has several open questions
Cylinder count is only one part of an engine regulation. Officials also need to decide capacity, turbocharging, maximum speed and any remaining hybrid assistance. Fuel flow and total energy limits would shape both performance and efficiency. The final rules would also define testing time and the number of permitted components. A cheaper unit could attract another supplier, but a rushed change could waste recent investment. Current manufacturers built new facilities for the 2026 programme. Teams without their own engine depend on supply agreements. They need enough time to design cooling, gearboxes and rear suspension around a confirmed package.
Supporters of a future combustion formula connect it with fully sustainable fuel. That approach aims to reduce fossil carbon without removing the engine from the car. Production volume is small compared with road transport. Formula 1 can therefore test expensive fuel processes before they reach a wider market. The environmental effect depends on how the fuel is produced and transported. A technical label alone does not answer every question about total emissions. The championship also measures emissions from travel, factories and event operations. Its engine choice forms one part of that broader target.
Sound and simpler operation attract support
V8 engines remain popular with many supporters because of their sound and connection with earlier Formula 1 seasons. A simpler design could also reduce development cost. The current hybrid system offers several different technical strengths. Energy recovery is relevant to road technology and gives engineers another area for competition.
Drivers have reported that electrical deployment can create unusual speed changes on long straights. Formula 1 adjusted operating rules during the first half of 2026. Future discussions will compare those benefits with cost and racing quality.

No immediate change affects the current season
The 2026 championship continues with the existing V6 hybrid units. Teams will return from the summer break for the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort. Existing suppliers also need enough time to judge cost and staffing. Potential newcomers need clear limits before approving an entry. It also means the current hybrid engines remain central for several seasons. Sustainable fuel is already part of the 2026 regulations. The fuel uses carbon from non-fossil sources under the approved specification. Its purpose is to reduce new fossil carbon while retaining combustion. Formula 1 expects sustainable fuel to remain relevant in later engine rules. Production, transport and total fuel use determine its environmental effect. Formula 1 can test demanding blends because every engine runs under close measurement. Suppliers can also apply useful fuel chemistry outside racing. The environmental targets remain part of every discussion about a larger combustion engine. The present championship cannot change through Parker’s prediction. Cars continue using the approved V6 hybrid package and its larger electrical output. Teams are still solving reliability and energy-management problems from the new rules. Drivers must follow the current deployment procedures at every Grand Prix. Any V8 regulation would begin through consultation and a published technical document. Until that happens, suppliers cannot design toward a fixed specification. Parker has described an expected direction from Formula 1 management. He has not announced an engine, a launch season or a list of participating manufacturers. Parker’s comments do not change the current engine regulations.
